Beautiful Structures argues that structure, mathematics, aesthetics, teleology, and personhood belong together rather than existing as separate domains requiring subsequent integration. The world is necessarily structured, and structure possesses an aesthetic character as a condition of its existence rather than becoming aesthetic only through human response. Mathematics, on this account, is not an abstract language imposed upon reality but the articulation of the relations constitutive of structure itself. Modern physics reveals that the fundamental mathematical structures underlying the physical world possess the contingent property of beauty. Subatomic structures and forces have repeatedly been recognized by physicists as elegant, symmetrical, harmonious, and beautiful. Yet beauty is not a necessary property of structure: structures may be aesthetically defective as well as beautiful. The remarkable beauty of the foundational structures disclosed by physics therefore calls for explanation. The book argues that this question leads naturally from aesthetics to teleology. The ordered relation of parts within beautiful structures suggests an intentional order in which aesthetic and purposive organization are intimately connected.
