God's creation acts are described as good. From the beginning man disobeyed God and rebelled against him. It starts with Adam and Eve, who did not abide by God's prohibition to eat from the tree of knowledge. Next Cain killed his brother Abel. Lamech, who was the great-great-great-grandson of Cain, boasted that he killed a man. For a short period, there was a glimmer of hope when the Bible mentions the development of civilization with the advancement of pastoral nomadism, music, and metallurgy. However, God regretted that he created man because his thoughts were evil, and the land was filled with lawlessness. Therefore, God decided to erase both men and the animal kingdom with a flood. The end of the flood signals a new beginning for human life, but humans reverted to their immoral behavior again, which is exemplified by the story of the Tower of Babel. Several texts from the Ancient Near East have similarities to the Genesis narrative, which raises questions on how close or different they are. In this book the author provides provocative and useful answers regarding these stories of primeval history, including their purpose and place within the biblical narrative.
